TL;DR for my fellow skimmers 💕
Adult acne in your 30s isn't always a random annoyance, hormonal shifts tied to perimenopause can start showing up as early as your mid-30s.
Why it's happening: dropping estrogen and progesterone lets androgens become more dominant, which increases oil production and causes breakouts even if you had clear skin before.
Products I love for handling my hyperpigmentation:
Topicals Faded Brightening and Clearing Serum: the fastest mover on dark marks I've tried, 2-3x a week and my scars have visibly lightened in a month
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV Face Moisturizer SPF 30: non-negotiable every single morning, no white cast, no greasiness, works beautifully with vitamin C
ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Serum: almost-immediate glass skin effect, a little sticky alone but gorgeous once moisturizer goes over it
Innisfree Green Tea Enzyme Vitamin C Serum: my morning brightness booster, mixed right into my SPF
Pivot and Pink | Glow Skincare Log ($3): the Notion template I built to easily track what your skin actually loves so you stop wasting money on expensive skincare products
First, let's talk about what's actually going on: Perimenopause and hormonal acne...
If you're a woman who had relatively clear skin in your 20s, hit your 30s, and suddenly felt like your skin turned on you, you are not alone. A lot of us are experiencing this right now and it, thankfully, might not be anything you did wrong.
Research shows a connection between hormonal shifts in perimenopause and the acne a lot of us are experiencing right now:
Perimenopause typically begins in the mid to late 40s with an average onset around age 47.
Hormonal shifts can start showing up as early as the mid 30s for some women. And that's where a lot of us are at, age wise.
Long story short: when estrogen and progesterone start to drop, androgens become relatively more dominant, which can increase sebum production and lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
I'm not a doctor or a dermatologist and I want to be very clear about that. But when I made a post about this on Threads, the response was overwhelming:
Women were saying they had perfect skin as teenagers and then their 30s arrived and suddenly they were dealing with breakouts they never had before.
Others said they had acne as teens, cleared up in their 20s, and now it was back with no explanation.
It made me realize how many of us are confused and frustrated and not getting answers.
If you want to learn more about the hormonal connection and perimenopause, I would encourage you to go do some research and speak with a doctor that can help you with your specific situation.

My current hyperpigmentation journey...
I didn't start dealing with significant acne until I was 33 or 34 years old. And it has hit my confidence in ways I never expected. I got to a place where I genuinely loved myself and these breakouts have wrecked some of that.
The timelapse above is of my most problematic spot of my face for acne and hyperpigmentation. The first four image are from my Invisalign tracker, hence the smile and lower quality. The 7/11/26 photo is my normal camera, explaining the quality difference. But as you can see, several spots (both active and healing) have lightened over the past month!
I still have a ways to go but I attribute most of my progress to my skincare routine and hyperpigmentation products (which I will get into later).
How much hyperpigmentation really affects your confidence...
What makes acne in our 30s particularly hard is the timing. A lot of women, myself included, spent our early 30s doing real inner work. Healing, growing, learning who we actually are. I got to a place where I genuinely love myself and feel more confident than I ever have (self-concept rampages were a big part of that, read about them here). And then acne shows up and chips away at that in this very specific and irritating way.
Stress is another known trigger for breakouts, and many of us are definitely experiencing a lot of that! So when things that are out of our control starts to affect how we feel about ourselves, it creates a vicious cycle of frustration, stress, and annoyance.
While I haven't figured it all out, I have found some things that are helping me gain my confidence back and clear my skin up. And that's what I'm here to share with you!
The 4 products making the biggest difference for my skin...
I have oily skin. Before my 30s I wouldn't have called my skin acne prone, but here we are. Everything I'm sharing below is what I personally use. I will always tell you what is working and what I honestly think about products I talk about. If you want to see all my routines in one place, the skincare hub is right here!
This is the most recent addition to my routine and it has moved faster on my hyperpigmentation than anything else I have tried. I don't even use it every day, usually two or three times a week, and I have still seen my acne scars brighten and lighten noticeably in the past month. If you're dealing with dark marks left behind from breakouts, I would highly recommend you to try this one.
I'm always recommending this sunscreen! If you aren't wearing sunscreen daily, every product you are using in your skincare routine will never be able to work at its full capacity. The sun, lights, and environment interfere with the progress your other products are making. I don't go outside every day and I still wear this every single morning.
It doesn't leave a white cast, doesn't feel greasy on my oily skin, and it layers beautifully with my vitamin C serum. It has quickly become a non-negotiable for me. For more about this sunscreen and my other favorite, read more here!
This one is relatively new in my rotation too and I'm pretty obsessed with it. If you want glass skin, this product delivers that almost immediately. It is a little sticky on its own but once you apply moisturizer on top it settles in perfectly. My skin looks so beautiful and healthy when I use this and for someone with oily skin that is saying something.
Part of why these products are actually working is what I do at night to help them along. I have a separate post on my active skincare nights using retinol and exfoliants that has been a big part of fading my dark marks faster!
This is part of my morning routine. I mix it with my La Roche Posay sunscreen and it helps everything glide on more smoothly. The vitamin C is there to support brightening and it works well alongside all my other products.
While these four products are my top picks for hyperpigmentation, they aren't the only things I use or recommend. If you want to see my full hyperpigmentation product list you can find it on my Amazon storefront linked here.
One thing that has made a real difference in how much hyperpigmentation I'm left with after a breakout clears is how I manage the active spot while it's healing. I have a whole post on exactly how I use pimple patches now, and how it's the most effective method I've ever used!
The Pivot & Pink Glow Skincare Log: The tool I built because I needed it...
I also want to tell you about something I made for myself because I couldn't find the perfect version of it out in the wild. And it's now available for others in the same boat that I was in!

It's called the Pivot and Pink | Glow Skincare Log and it is a beginner-friendly and aesthetic Notion template I built to help you track your products, understand your skin patterns, and stop wasting money on things that don't work for you.
Every skincare tracker I found was either overwhelming and bloated with so much information and imagery that even I, someone who knows Notion well, felt stressed looking at it, or it was too simple and not at all cute. As someone who has a Master's Degree in behavior analysis I know that if a tool isn't easy and enjoyable to use, people aren't going to use it, period. So I built something that is simple, aesthetic, functional, and well worth the money!
For $3 you get:
A skincare products log where you track everything you own and use.
A daily skin diary and calendar to note how your skin is behaving.
My personal pause and reset protocol, which is the exact system I use every time my skin breaks out and I cannot pinpoint why. I have used it consistently for over a year and it resolves the issue in a manageable timeframe.
An ingredient library so you can track what your skin loves and hates and use that information when you're shopping for new products.
The entire point of this log is to save you money. That $3 is going to pay for itself the first time it stops you from buying a $35 moisturizer that would have broken you out. Knowing your skin, tracking your patterns, and having a protocol when things go sideways is genuinely one of the most practical things you can do for your skin and your wallet.
You can snag your own copy of the Pivot and Pink Glow Skincare Log right here!
You are not alone in this new era...
Acne in our 30s is so beyond frustrating because we didn't expect it. We got through our teenage years and thought we were passed that stage. And now we're dealing with it at the same time we want to show up in the world more confidently than ever before.
I'm right there with you, and while I don't have all the answers I'm happy to share everything that's been helping me and I hope something here helps you too.
If you're going through this, drop a comment below. Tell me what you're dealing with, what has helped, or what you're still trying to figure out. The more we talk about this openly the less alone all of us feel!
The journey to a life that you truly love doesn't have to stop here!
