A glass of layered red, white, and green matcha on a wooden table, softly lit against a dark background.

TL;DR for my fellow skimmers 💕

The secret to a matcha drink that doesn't taste like grass? Strawberry jam. This protein-packed recipe is quick, pretty, lactose-free friendly, under 300 calories, and perfect whether you're a matcha lover, skeptic, or on the fence.

Matcha, and what the true problem is...

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen someone say matcha is disgusting, I could probably fund my entire matcha supply for the next two years. I get it though. I really do. Matcha on its own has a grassy, bitter edge that is not exactly love at first sip for most people.

But here’s what I’ve figured out after years of trial and error: matcha isn’t the problem, every other ingredient is.

I’ve landed on a recipe that is:

  • Quick and easy (no grinding required)

  • Pretty (we love a cute drink in the morning)

  • Packed with protein

  • For the lactose intolerant baddies

  • Perfect for those on the go

  • Under 300 calories

  • Tastes good enough that I look forward to it every morning

This protein-packed matcha recipe is perfect for:

  • The matcha lovers who want something new

  • The matcha skeptics who want to give it one more real chance

  • The matcha curious who have been on the fence

An important heads up before we get into it: this recipe has texture. The strawberry jam creates little pieces throughout the drink, similar to boba. If textures in drinks are not your thing, you can strain the jam through a fine mesh sieve to get the flavor without the bits. Either way works! Just know going in so you’re not surprised.

Here are the ingredients...

• 8 oz water

• 1 scoop of Premier Protein Vanilla Powder (half a standard serving)

• 1 tablespoon of strawberry jam (I typically do a little less)

• A handful of ice

• Optional: 2 tablespoons of Cool Whip (Reduced Fat) & a cute cup to serve it in

How to make it...

If you're only using the shaker bottle:

  1. Start by adding your water, milk, protein powder, and matcha powder to the shaker bottle with the shaker ball inside. Shake it well until everything is fully combined and smooth.

  2. Next, spoon your strawberry jam directly into the shaker bottle. Add your ice and, if you're feeling extra, your two tablespoons of Cool Whip.

  3. Put the lid back on and give it a gentle shake to mix everything together. The jam will still settle near the bottom.

  4. Drink and enjoy!

If you're using a cute cup:

  1. Start by adding your water and milk to the shaker bottle with the shaker ball inside. Add your scoop of protein powder and your scoop of matcha powder.

  2. Put the lid on and shake it well until everything is fully combined and smooth. The shaker ball does the heavy lifting here so you don’t need a frother or any special equipment.

  3. Grab your serving cup and spoon your strawberry jam into the bottom. This is the move that makes the whole drink delicious. The jam adds sweetness and a fruity layer that softens the matcha without making it taste flat like granulated sugar would. It settles at the bottom and weaves through the drink as you sip, which is why you get those little jam surprises mid-drink that I personally love.

  4. Pour your shaken matcha protein mixture over the jam. Add your ice. If you’re feeling extra, add your two tablespoons of Cool Whip on top and give everything a gentle stir.

  5. Drink through a straw and enjoy!

Why this works...

The vanilla protein powder does two things at once:

  • It adds a natural sweetness and creaminess that takes the edge off the matcha

  • It adds a solid protein hit to your morning without requiring you to eat an actual meal. I don’t like eating in the morning and this keeps me satiated for hours.

The Fairlife milk adds another layer of creaminess and it’s lactose free, which is helpful for a lot of us.

The strawberry jam rounds everything out with a little brightness and natural sweetness.

The whole drink comes in under 300 calories, which for how filling and enjoyable it is, feels like a pretty good deal! We love a healthy morning drink.

It’s also genuinely pretty to look at. A green drink with a little cream on top and red/pink at the bottom? We’re making life prettier and easier over here and your morning drink is not exempt from that.

What I’m trying next...

I’m planning to experiment with different jams to see how they pair with matcha. Peach is top of my list, and grape is on the shortlist too. As of writing this, strawberry is the only one I’ve tried and I have zero complaints, but I’ll report back when I’ve had time to test the others!

Let me know what you think...

If you try this, tell me about it in the comments! Did you love it? Did you hate it? This is one of those things that’s more fun when we’re all experimenting together, so drop your results, your variations, and your own matcha tips below. I’m always looking for ways to make mine even better!
