How I Reset My Entire Life in My 30s (The Full Breakdown)

Updated: 1 day ago
TL;DR for my fellow skimmers 💕
In August 2023 a single moment made me say "no more" to the version of myself that I had grown into up until that point. What followed was three years of slow, unglamorous, and completely life-changing work. Here are some things I did...
The internal work came first:
Healing low self-worth (the root cause of everything else)
Fixing anxious attachment and breaking toxic relationship cycles
Quitting people pleasing and protecting my energy
Letting go of hyper-independence, and more
Then the external upgrades, once the foundation was solid:
Transforming my home into a space that actually felt like mine
Building real financial security (HYSA + Roth IRA)
Creating a Glow-Up Fund with a built-in savings habit
Color analysis and beauty experimentation
Hiring help, learning to delegate, and more

In August of 2023, someone I cared about discarded me like I was nothing. And instead of chasing them or shrinking myself to win back their approval like I would have done a hundred times before, something shifted. I said no more. Not just to that situation, but to the entire version of myself that had allowed it.
That moment was my catalyst. What followed was three years of the most intentional, uncomfortable, and ultimately beautiful work I've ever done on myself. And let me be super clear on something before we jump into everything: this did not happen overnight. Three years. Real, slow, hard as nails, and unglamorous effort.
As someone with an entire Master's degree in Behavior Analysis, I knew the science behind habit loops and human behavior in theory. But applying it when my own life felt completely upended? That was the ultimate stress test. I didn't just study behavioral frameworks, I had to live them, refine them, and create low-friction strategies that actually worked when my energy was on zero.
I'm sharing this because I think one of the most harmful things we do to ourselves is compare our beginning to someone else's highlight reel and that’s the quickest way to stop you from even starting. And let me tell you, there were some dips along the way too. I ended up building a specific framework for those low-capacity stretches, and I wrote about it here.
I also want to emphasize the order in which I did everything. I didn’t start by overhauling my home, skincare, finances, or my wardrobe. I started inside. Every single external upgrade I made came after I had done enough inner work to ensure those changes were rooted in true self-worth rather than self-punishment. I didn’t realize how vital that order would be until sometime in 2026, when I was deeply diving into my outer glow-up.
The Internal Work: Where Everything Actually Begins
Healing low self-worth
Everything I'm about to share in this post traces back to one root cause: I did not believe I deserved good things. And that belief showed up in how I:
treated my body
the places I stayed in
the people I tolerated
the way I consistently put everyone else's comfort before my own wellbeing
Once I identified low self-worth as the engine running all of my most self-destructive patterns, I could actually start addressing it at the source instead of just managing the symptoms.
Fixing anxious attachment and ending toxic relationship patterns
For a long time I was in a victim mindset when it came to relationships. I kept attracting emotionally unavailable people and I genuinely couldn’t understand why. What I eventually had to reckon with was that my anxious attachment style was primarily driving those choices. The fear of abandonment, the people pleasing, the way I used a persona to earn validation instead of having the boundaries to only accept proper treatment. Understanding attachment theory didn't fix everything overnight but it completely changed how I saw my own patterns and that was the beginning of breaking them.
Rebuilding authentic confidence instead of performative bravado
I had spent years confusing a sassy personality with actual confidence. The walls, the sharp wit, the "I don't care" energy. None of that was real confidence. Real confidence isn’t this brash, in-your-face thing. I had to do the work of separating who I actually was from the armor I had built to protect myself. And this included me addressing the jealousy and insecurity I felt around other women that was keeping me from genuine connections.
Self-concept rampages have quickly become a staple in shaping how I see myself now, too. If you've never heard of them, check out this post about them.

Quitting people pleasing and protecting my energy
People pleasing is a trauma response, period. I kept myself small and agreeable for years because I believed my worth was tied to other people's approval of me or what I could do for them. Unlearning that was one of the most freeing things I've ever done. I stopped over-explaining, stopped shrinking, and finally started saying no without a paragraph of justification.
Processing emotions and releasing hyper-independence
I had a deeply held belief that crying made me weak, so I just didn't do it; whether in front of others or alone in my room. I stuffed everything down, kept it moving, handled everything myself, and wondered why I felt so heavy all the time. Learning to actually:
feel things
cry when I needed to cry
process grief and stress through my body instead of pushing it down changed everything
I also had to face the fact that my hyper-independence was not a flex. It was a fear-induced trauma response. The fear of being let down and being seen as a burden was so debilitating to me. Letting that go and actually allowing others to help me was one of the harder parts of this journey.
Embracing introversion and learning to love my own company
I used to think something was wrong with me for being a homebody and for feeling exhausted after spending time with people. The funny thing is, I wouldn’t even be completely happy when I was hanging out on my own. Eventually I realized that I hadn't loved my own company because I didn’t even like myself. As I healed, solitude stopped feeling like something I wanted (yet didn’t settle completely into) and it started feeling like my sanctuary. This was a significant shift for me.
One fun thing I started doing that helped with finding joy in my daily life were hobbies! If you're wanting help finding a hobby you'll love, check out my post here for tips and hobby suggestions.
Adopting an experimental / trial-and-error mindset
I used to see every new thing I tried as a potential failure waiting to happen. I was a perfectionist and if something wasn’t perfectly ready to go I’d stall on it. Now I treat everything as a fun experiment. This reframe may sound simple but it removes so much pressure and unnecessary expectations. Finding out what doesn't work for you is such useful information, not a waste of time. Adopting this mindset made me more willing to try things, pivot when something wasn't right, and stop attaching my identity to any single outcome.
This exact trial-and-error process is what inspired me to build concrete roadmaps instead of leaving you to figure it out by DIY-ing everything alone like I did. Whether it's...

The External Upgrades: What Happened Once the Foundation Was Solid
Starting a holistic health journey
Once I believed I deserved to feel good, look good, and be perceived by others, taking care of my body started to feel like self-love instead of a chore. I approached nutrition and movement as nourishment rather than obligation. That one shift changed my entire relationship to my health.
Part of this shift was getting my skin situation under control and creating a skincare routine that would give me the soft, glowy skin the girls online had. I created a hub post for all of my skincare routines here if you want the full picture!
Transforming my home into a sanctuary
I spent years never fully settling into the spaces where I lived. Subconsciously I think I was always half ready to leave and afraid to think something would be more permanent. Then I started:
painting rooms
hanging art
and styling my space intentionally
I was making it feel like mine, instead of something rented or borrowed. Claiming physical permanency was an act of healing I didn't expect.
Replacing hand-me-downs with intentional choices
I slowly started replacing the things in my daily life that didn't reflect who I was becoming. Towels, silverware, bedding, and jewelry are just a few examples. Mind you, this was not done all at once! This has been a gradual shift toward owning things I actually chose for myself rather than things that ended up with me by default.
Building real financial security
I moved beyond basic financial literacy and into actual wealth-building. I opened a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA) and a Roth IRA and set up automatic contributions to both so the decision was already made for me every month!
Creating a Glow-Up Fund
This one I'm especially proud of and excited for! I set aside a specific monthly budget dedicated entirely to investing in myself. Self-care, personal enhancements, things that make me feel good. The rule is simple: whatever I don't spend rolls directly into my High-Yield Savings to keep compounding. It removes the guilt from spending on yourself and creates a built-in savings habit at the same time, you literally can’t lose.
The Glow-Up Fund is also similar to how I track things like my skincare products. The Glow Skincare Log I built keeps me from wasting money on products that don't work, which is very much in the spirit of this fund!

Color analysis and beauty experimentation
I did my own research and spent time actually testing what worked for my skin tone, hair shape, and features. Learning what colors, textures, and shapes flatter me changed how I shop and how I feel getting dressed. I also am a huge advocate for decluttering your closet, making some extra cash when you can, and clearing that space for what makes you feel the most beautiful! And what you purchase never has to be super posh or expensive, you just need to choose it with intentionality.
Getting Invisalign
This one started as a somewhat necessary health decision and became one of the most unexpected confidence boosts of my entire journey. I'm still in it but the impact on how I feel day to day has been super significant.
Hiring help and learning to delegate
As mentioned before, asking for help used to feel like wearing a badge of failure. Now I understand it as strategy and a part of living a soft life. I started asking for support with things like cleaning and lawn care because protecting my time and mental energy is worth the investment. Your peace is a top priority, act accordingly.
Embracing pink and feminine aesthetics unapologetically
I love the color pink, I have my entire life. I also love anything soft, feminine, and pretty. And for a long time I downplayed these loves because I worried about how it looked or what people would think. I don't do that anymore. If something brings me genuine joy and doesn't hurt anyone (aka a new pink plushie), I pursue it fully. That's the rule I live by now and it's made my life feel so much more fulfilling and cute!
