TLDR for my fellow skimmers 💕

If you've been trying to reset your life but you're too exhausted to start, work burnout is probably why. The short version:

  • Work burnout isn't just a job problem. Work is our livelihood, and you can't fully regulate your nervous system while money stress is running in the background. It's nearly impossible.

  • You're not a failure for not working in the field you got a degree in, for not having a degree, or for getting another degree that didn't fix things. We were promised a system that doesn't exist anymore.

  • Intensive life reset advice fails when you're burnt out because 6 AM routines, daily journaling, and 80-page self-improvement workbooks demand energy you don't have. Then the guilt takes even more mental energy from you.

  • What's actually in your control: protecting your remaining energy, setting firm boundaries around your time, and detaching your identity and self-worth from your job.

  • You can't fix everything tonight. But you can start small, within what you can actually control.

The world we were promised doesn't exist

Most of us in our 30s (especially millennials) were told the same story growing up: go to college, work hard, give your life to your career, and you'd feel fulfilled, secure, and successful. Life would be easy as pie. That was the deal. And that is not what happened.

There are layoffs everywhere. The job market is awful. AI is out here scaring us because we're worried it's going to replace our jobs. A lot of us are working jobs that have nothing to do with what we went to school for, and that makes us feel like failures. And then some of us did work in our fields and found out we didn't even like the work, or the field burnt us out completely. That's my literal situation.

I worked for years in a career that numbed and burnt me out until I realized I had to get out of there. Then a lot of us turn around and think, okay, let me get another degree! Surely that'll fix everything. As somebody who went and got a second degree, looking back seven years later: it got me out of that career field, but it didn't do what I thought it was going to do. A degree can feel like the answer, more education = more money, right? But it's not always the answer, especially not today.

So a lot of us have ended up exhausted, underpaid, and stuck in roles that don't satisfy us or make us happy. It's absolutely miserable.

And here's the part I need you to hear, lovely:

  • You are not a failure for working in a field unrelated to your college degree.

  • You're not a failure for not having a college degree.

  • You're not a failure for getting a Master's degree thinking it would get you out of the rat race, only for it not to work. None of that is on you.

That's the system. The system we're living in now is not the one we were promised, and that's really infuriating for us. And it's more than okay to be mad about it.

Work doesn't end when you log off or when the weekend comes

Here's what makes it worse: work is integrated into our entire lives. You log off, but now you have a commute. Now you're taking care of your household. Maybe you're heading to a part-time job. Or you're mentally sorting through everything you couldn't deal with while you were at work: job searching, the money stress consuming your existence, the list goes on.

And if you're in the part where you've applied, interviewed, and now you're just waiting to hear back? That's its own special kind of misery, and I wrote a whole post on surviving that limbo or in between space.

And the burnout starts stealing the small joys too. You want a fun hobby, one you get to be bad at, one you don't have to monetize, one that's just yours. But we feel like we're not allowed to have that, because every free minute is supposed to go toward figuring out how to make more money so we can live a decent life.

We don't want to live in survival mode anymore. But we're so mentally drained by work that by 11 PM we're going to bed without having had a single minute to ourselves. So we never really catch a break, and we never build up the extra energy it takes to actually make our lives better.

Why traditional life reset advice fails when you're burnt out

This is why all the intensive reset advice doesn't work when you're burnt out. Like the 6 AM before-work routine or journaling every single morning and night.

All of that advice keeps telling us to do things that demand energy and capacity we simply do not have. If you've read my Self-Care Trap post, you already know how I feel about aesthetic self-care tasks and their role in a life reset journey.

And when we can't do them? We feel guilty about it. Which takes even more mental energy away from us. It's a spiral on top of a spiral.

It was never just a job

Our job is how most of us make a majority of our income, how we make money is how we live, and how we live determines how we feel on a daily basis. So when work is burning you out, it consumes your mind even after hours, because it was never just a job. It's the thing your entire life runs on.

You can't regulate your nervous system when you have money issues. It is nearly impossible. I don't care how many breathing exercises or affirmations you do.

And that's the trap: even when you commit to a life reset, you still have to live your life. You still have to pay for things, and paying for things requires the job that's burning you out.

It's a cycle you can't escape: the job drains you → the draining keeps you from fixing anything → fixing anything would take energy the job already took → and repeat.

What's actually in your control

So let's get to the perspective shift, because this is where things get good. The job market? Out of your control. Corporate demands? Out of your control. AI, and all the economic pressures that come with it? Completely out of your control.

What is in your control:

  • protecting your remaining energy.

  • setting firm boundaries around your time.

  • learning how to get your spark back.

  • detaching your personal identity and self-worth from your job.

You start reclaiming your mental peace by setting and following through on those hard boundaries and having a reframed mindset around your job/career.

I feel confident saying that because I've lived it. I got my second Master's degree right before COVID started, like December 2019.

I had to stay in the career I was trying to leave and not make my career shift until two years into COVID. Times have changed so much since 2021 that the standard "just go get a degree" advice isn't where I'd lean anymore.

You can't fix everything tonight

We know it deep down, but it still sucks to say it out loud. But you can start doing small things that help you feel better, things that are actually within your control. That's not a consolation prize. That's how a reset actually starts when your battery is at 2%. Some things I do when I'm in a funk or burnt out can be found in this blog post.
